If you are standing directly on the north pole and you walk one mile south, then one mile west, then one mile north, you’ll make a triangular path and arrive back at the North Pole, your point of origin.

=> If you are at the north pole no matter the direction you choose to take; you always go south. So you make your mile south and now you are exactly one mile south of the north pole. If you walk west (or east) it won’t change that you are exactly one mile south of the north pole. So then you walk north, and you end up exactly at the north pole again, which is where you started.
=>The second location is little bit more complicated than the first one. It’s actually not a single location but it can be any location on a path which is a ring that lies a short distance to the north of the south pole. Now if you walk a mile south from that location you end up being at a spot that is so close to the south pole that when you walk exactly one mile west (or east) you’ll end up at that exact spot again. So because you end up at that spot again you can then travel your mile north back to where you started originally.
the answer actually is not a single location but it can be any location on a path which is a ring that lies a short distance to the north of the south pole. Not just for short distances, but for any distance. It must be close enough that the circumference of the circle when walking west is one mile. Common sense says this is one equal 2*pi*R (one being the mile and R being the distance from the south pole in miles), which is actually incorrect, since this is the surface of a sphere not a flat plane. I’ll leave the actual math to others.
The easy way to understand this Elon mask’s riddle is by realizing that you’re actually walking in a triangle. Normally, a true-North compass would lead you to make three legs of a square, but because of the Earth being a sphere (and your location AT true north) the compass would lead you to make a triangle.
Then your going north and south would cancel each other out, and the one mile of walking west would be reduced as you got more north.
If you are at the north pole and walk one mile south, then turn and walk west you can walk however far you want as you are walking in a circle around the north pole. And if you when walk one mile north you will end up at the north pole no matter where on the circle you are, as you would be one mile away all the time.
